Larry and Nancy Kirchhoff
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Army Private First Class David A. Kirchhoff, 31, suffered heat stroke while driving a truck, which enemy fire delayed for considerable time in the northern Iraq desert; he died five days later in a hospital in Germany on August 14, 2003.
An Iowa National Guardsman, Kirchhoff began basic training on September 11, 2002. Although “he wanted to go in [and] thought about it a lot, after September 11, he felt like he needed to do it,” says his mother, Nancy Kirchhoff. “We were all for it because he was taking some responsibility. His dad is a Vietnam vet and was especially proud.”
