Flag Day 2009

Yesterday, we celebrated the adoption of the United States’ flag as our national symbol of freedom. At Families United, we understand the importance of our flag and are working every day to honor the men and women who bravely fight to protect the freedoms and principles that it represents.
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution establishing our national flag, and June 14 was officially designated as a national holiday in 1949 through an Act of Congress. Though there have been many versions of the American Flag through the years, its symbolism is ever-present.

Here at Families United, we’re doing something special this year to celebrate Old Glory, and we need your help! Take a few pictures of flags on Flag Day and send them to Families United. Your flag, your city’s flag, with people, without people…whatever strikes you, snap a photo. If you wish to add a few words also, feel free to do so. Then, send your flag picture to Info@FamiliesUnitedMission.com.

We will use these photos for a special section on our website and in our newsletter on the Fourth of July to honor our troops who bravely serve this country by defending our freedom.

Fourth of July Celebrations

In anticipation of Independence Day, Families United is compiling a list of Fourth of July festivities across America. If you know of a public event in your area, send us that information and we will add it to our events list to share with other military families.

Memorial Day Recap

Families United hosted a fundraiser for the Special Operations Warriors Foundation in Solvang, CA, on Memorial Day weekend called a “Tribute to Troops.” Featured speaker, Families United President Merrilee Carlson, joined host Bo Derek and hundreds of veterans, active duty troops, as well as Blue Star and Gold Star families for a live and silent auction, barbeque and live entertainment. Also present was a large display of military vehicles and firepower, courtesy of our servicemen and women at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Thousands of dollars were raised for the Special Operations Warriors Foundation and Families United was thankful to be a part of this wonderful event.
