Honor Veterans On Labor Day

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, honors the men and women who tirelessly worked to make our nation stronger and more prosperous. Although this holiday, which began in September of 1882, celebrates the American work force, we also honor the work of our veterans. Our veterans are our nation's heroes and it is because of the work that they did for this country that we are living in the country of the free and the brave.
If you are a veteran and want to share your story or pictures for our website please email them to Rob@FamiliesUintedMission.com.

Gold Star Families - Register for Time of Remembrance

As many of you are aware, the original dates for the National Weekend of Remembrance fell on Rosh Hashanah. Though Families United was not involved in the initial scheduling of the event, we have been working tirelessly with the organizations involved to accommodate Gold Star families of all faiths. The event has now been rescheduled for the weekend of September 25-26, 2009.
For more information and to register for this year’s event visit www.WeekendofRemembrance.org. Feel free to give us a call at (202) 293-4656 or email Brandi Kolmer at Brandi@FamiliesUnitedMission.com if you have any questions or concerns.

Military Spouse Career Opportunities

For many military spouses, multiple relocations due to their husbands’ or wives’ military career make having or advancing a career of their own a significant challenge. In light of this reality, the Departments of Labor and Defense are developing a program to help ease this difficulty. The Military Spouse Career Advancement Account is a limited- time opportunity offered at several bases to help military spouses get the training and education needed for a career that spans several bases. The program has already been successful at several bases and is now being offered at additional bases, including Fort Bragg, Eglin AFB, and Camp Pendleton.

New GI Bill Transfer Options Take Effect August 1, 2009

The Post-9/11 GI Bill went into effect on August 1, 2009, and is expected to offer veterans $78 billion in benefits during the coming decade. The bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. However, you must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
